I myself get one or two popups a month but that is expected. I use Firefox mostly and have found a great plugin to prevent 90% of the popups.

PopupMaster places the popup blocker icon in the status bar, regardless of site settings. PopupMaster contains no functionality to block popups. It simply forces Firefox to always show the popup-blocker icon in the status bar. Great little app written by yellow5.us
